Need a break from it all, and want to get away from the city? Try one of the destinations featured below, and be sure to get a fulfilling experience during the Puja vacations, but only at the cost of being away from all the festive hustle and bustle of Kolkata. Celebrate in your own style – and at your own preferred location !
Backpacking: The way to go
When Puja pandals populate Kolkata, crowds and traffic woes increase, life in the city becomes difficult. Don’t let the blaring loudspeakers and never-ending traffic jams get to you – just pack your bags and backpack across the great outdoors. Don’t let the thought of run-down hotels and unpredictable weather change your mind. Backpacking is one of the coolest options for travellers who want to get off the beaten track and follow their hearts. For the traveller who’s tired of the usual tourist attractions and is hoping to pack in a lot more than just some sightseeing and a lot of photographs, backpacking may be the way to go. Trek off to remote little towns, stay at random motels, and tuck into local dishes. Find out from the locals about the best places
to visit and bring out the adventurer in you. For many Indian tourists, travelling simply means shopping and taking postcard pictures of conventional tourist spots. But the backpacker belongs to a different breed. The backpacker wants to pack in more than just the touristy factors – adding new experiences tops his list of priorities.

Somehow though, backpacking seems to have become entangled with the idea of living in rickety motels with growing insect populations and moving around with a low crowd. And don’t even talk about the unpalatable meals that are likely to be doled out to the budget-ruled backpacker.

But bad food and dingy hotels do not dog today’s backpackers. In fact, you can easily head to dream destinations like Europe, Australia and the US aided by a shoestring budget. These days, there are a number of tour operators that offer packages for independent travellers. So you can get some fantastic deals while travelling and check out the Eiffel Tower, Buckinham Palace and the gondolas of Italy, all on a shoe-string budget.

And for the traveller who is troubled by the thought of a solitary trip, sign up with a tour operator and head off to exotic locales with like-minded travellers for company. It’s safe without cutting down on the adventure quotient.

India’s first travel resource for independent travellers, The Backpacker Company, assists travellers in settling on a budget, planning their travel itinerary, booking places to stay and train and flight tickets. And tour organisers like Contiki holidays arrange trips for groups of backpackers.

Backpacker destinations
In general, Europe is the destination of choice for backpackers thanks to the availability of backpacking infrastructure. Also, the sheer variety of cultures, rich history, and geographical variations available within the continent promise a variety of experiences to the eager beaver backpacker. But if your budget is really tiny, you might want to skip the Europe trip and head to the more affordable climes of Southeast Asia instead. Tickets to and fro and accommodation charges are considerably lower than one might find on the continent. Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia are just the tip of the tropical iceberg. Vietnam and Cambodia are also great places to visit though they aren’t as easy to travel in as the more conventional vacation

destinations. If a trip to foreign lands seems to big a step, Kolkatan backpackers could simply catch a train and head south where Goa and the backwaters of Kerala are truly backpacker’s paradise. You may have to rough it out and eat at roadside stalls, but if travelling is your passion, it should all be part of a gala experience.

Must-haves for the backpacker:
Backpack: You can’t be a backpacker without a god backpack. So invest in a good one. If you are a light packer, a 35-litre should do. But it’s preferable to carry a 50-lite one in case of a long-ish trip.

Sleeping bag: It’s best to carry your own bedding, and one that’s easy to fit in. You never know how clean the sheets and pillows at the hostels will be.

First-aid kit: It ’s always best to be prepared in case of medical emergencies. Stock up on all the necessary drugs and medical supplies. Spy wallet: So you can store your
money in different places. In addition to this, carry extra towels, socks and underwear. Doing laundry on a backpacking trip isn’t likely to be easy. It’s also necessary to invest in a pair of good walking shoes. Carry along extra plastic bags too, to separate dirty clothes from clean ones and wet clothes from dry ones.
